LACNIC 23 successfully comes to a close

Key visit by Fadi Chehadé and community discussions on the IANA Function's Stewardship Transition.

LACNIC 23, held in the city of Lima, Peru this week, marked a milestone in regional Internet development on various fronts. It is worth noting that the event had more than 500 participants, with the President and CEO of ICANN, Fadi Chehadé, participating for the first time in a Regional Internet Registry meeting.

Mr Chehadé had fruitful meetings with the entire Board of Directors of the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry, in addition to its Executive Director, Oscar Robles Garay, with whom he held a conference in the main auditorium of LACNIC 23 on Thursday 21 at 11am, just hours after globally announcing his resignation from the position of CEO of ICANN with effect from March 2016.

At the end of Chehadé's visit to LACNIC 23, Oscar Robles Garay declared, "I had the pleasure of working with Fadi in defending fundamental Internet principles, shared by our organizations during distinguished moments in the history of the Internet, such as the IANA Functions' Stewardship Transition. The ICANN CEO's resolve to validate and promote the Multistakeholder Model of Internet Governance has been invaluable and deserves to be highlighted, together with the time and energy dedicated to championing the final phase of the process."

As for the President of LACNIC's Board of Directors, Oscar Messano affirmed, "This has been a wonderful visit, which resulted in an excellent opportunity to thank Fadi for his leadership at the reins of ICANN. Just as well,  we acknowledge his management at key times such as the IANA Function's Stewardship Transition - a process that LACNIC and its community are determined to see through in its entirety during this final phase in the development of our community's proposal.

Within the framework of this activity, it has been announced that the upcoming LACNIC 24/LACNOG 2015 meeting will be held in Bogota from 28 September to 2 October 2015.
